Ichthyosaur Sea

I created this 2-day Jurassic sea illustration primarily in Blender, targeting photorealism with realtime models. The Ichthyosaur and squid were sculpted in Blender and textured in Substance Painter, the water's surface is a procedural shader, but the small fish are from a photo I took at an aquarium, and the bubbles on the water's surface were composited in from a few pixabay stock photos, to save time.
The Ichthyosaurs are mostly based on Ophthalmosaurus. Ichthyosaurs are not fish, but marine reptiles that evolved to resemble dolphins via convergent evolution. They also gave birth to live young! A good improvement over my previous prehistoric underwater scene from last year.

Simple swim posing via wave modifier, realtime viewport. The ichthyosaur is about 5000 tris.
