StarCraft: Eradication Fan Film Teaser

Teaser trailer for my fan film project, STARCRAFT: ERADICATION- a love letter to the cinematics of the original StarCraft: Brood War. All 3D assets made in Maya or Blender, textured in Substance Painter, and rendered in Cycles.

New cinematics were outside the scope of SC:Remastered, so I wanted to revisit those classic aesthetics for myself. Huge thanks to the original art and cinematics teams who inspired me as a child.
Thanks as well to more recent inspirations Syama Pederson (https://www.artstation.com/syaped) for setting a new standard for CG fan films with Astartes, SC2 artist Phill Gonzales (https://www.artstation.com/phillgonzales) for encouraging words back when I was learning 3D, and Lemon Sky (https://www.artstation.com/lemonsky) and all the artists involved in SC:Remastered. I look forward to releasing some short 'episodes' ahead.

I made the background music in Apple Logic. The sparks, lens flare, and the marine's breath are free stock elements (RocketStock, PremiumBeat, and Detonation Films respectively). One HDRI from HDRI Haven. The sound effects are from StarCraft 1, StarCraft: Ghost, StarCraft 2, and Soundmorph. The still images of the models are realtime sketchfab or substance screenshots.

I incorporated aspects of newer hydralisk designs for a slightly updated take on the original. Left images by Blizzard

No newer artwork (or even the old action figures) has quite captured the classic armor shapes, so here the only modernizations I made were to avoid clipping. Top image by Blizzard

Head made in Maya, textured in Substance Painter. Cigarette sculpted in Blender, textured in Substance Painter. A closeup shot will justify this level of detail!

My wraith has a touch more cockpit visibility and a slight tail angle change. This version is also very low-poly. Left image by Blizzard.

The original cinematics' zerglings had Hydralisk heads and only 4 limbs– not much fan art of this design. Left images by Blizzard.

I considered using my other Zergling model, as seen in this early lighting test, but opted for visual continuity with StarCraft 1. I will feature both models later on, as part of different Zerg factions.
